NFL Midseason Shakeup: Carolina Panthers Bench Bryce Young, Start Andy Dalton at QB
The Carolina Panthers are making a shocking move just six games into the 2023 NFL season, benching former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young in favor of veteran quarterback Andy Dalton.
As reported by NFL Network’s Mike Pelissero, the Panthers will start Dalton at quarterback beginning this week, marking a sudden end to Young’s reign as the team’s starting QB.
Young, 21, was drafted by the Panthers with the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and had shown flashes of brilliance during his rookie season. However, the team’s inconsistent performance and lack of overall success have led to a change at the quarterback position.
Dalton, 35, is a veteran signal-caller with over a decade of experience in the NFL. He previously played for the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals, where he started 116 games and threw for over 24,000 yards.
The move comes as a surprise to many, but Panthers head coach Matt Rhule has expressed concerns over the team’s red zone efficiency and inability to move the ball consistently on the ground.
"We’re just trying to find ways to score more points," Rhule said in a statement. "Andy’s got a lot of experience, and we think he can help us get in the end zone more effectively."
The Panthers will face off against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, with Dalton making his first start since the 2020 season. The move is sure to send shockwaves throughout the NFL, and it will be interesting to see how Young responds to being benched.
