Breaking News: Fake Retro Video Game Ring Worth €50m Smashed in Italy – BBC News
A massive operation to dismantle a criminal organization responsible for producing and selling fake retro video games has led to the seizure of a ring worth an estimated €50m in Italy.
Italian authorities, with the help of international law enforcement agencies, have smashed the operation, which was allegedly led by a group of individuals from Eastern Europe.
The fake games, which included classic titles such as Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, were being sold online and at gaming conventions. They were packaged in original Nintendo and Sega game cases, complete with fake manuals and instructions.
The operation, which was dubbed "Operation Ring", involved the seizure of over 10,000 fake games, as well as cash, gold, and other assets worth millions of euros.
The leader of the operation, a 42-year-old man from Eastern Europe, was arrested in a raid in the Italian city of Turin. Several other individuals were also arrested and are being questioned by authorities.
The fake games were being sold online through various marketplaces, including eBay and Amazon, as well as at gaming conventions and events. Authorities believe that the ring was responsible for selling tens of thousands of fake games, generating millions of euros in revenue.
The operation was the result of a joint investigation between Italian authorities, Europol, and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
