In a landmark report, the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have announced that the global poverty rate has continued to decline, marking a significant milestone in the fight against poverty. According to the latest figures, the proportion of people living on less than $1.90 a day has dropped to 6.9%, down from 12.7% in 2012.

This encouraging news comes as a result of concerted efforts by governments, international organizations, and non-profit groups to address poverty and inequality. The decline in global poverty rates is attributed to a combination of factors, including:

  • Economic growth in many countries, particularly in Asia and Africa
  • Increased access to education and healthcare
  • Expansion of social safety nets and humanitarian aid programs
  • Improved agricultural productivity and trade

The report highlights that the decline in global poverty rates is not limited to a single region or country. In fact, poverty reduction has been achieved in over 100 countries, with some of the most significant progress made in countries such as:

  • Bangladesh, where the poverty rate has fallen from 44.1% in 1990 to 15.6% in 2020
  • Cambodia, where the poverty rate has declined from 47.1% in 2004 to 13.5% in 2020
  • Rwanda, where the poverty rate has fallen from 77.8% in 2000 to 39.1% in 2020

While there is still much work to be done to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this latest report provides a glimmer of hope that the international community is making progress in addressing poverty and inequality.

QUOTES

"This is a significant achievement and a testament to the collective efforts of governments, international organizations, and civil society to reduce poverty and inequality," said World Bank President, David Malpass. "However, we must continue to work together to ensure that no one is left behind and that poverty is eradicated once and for all."

"The decline in global poverty rates is a reminder that our efforts to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development are paying off," said UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner. "However, we must remain committed to addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality and ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are shared by all."

FOLLOW-UP COVERAGE

Stay tuned for further analysis and updates on this story as it develops.

I've been seeming to see a lot of posts recently about recurrences and people getting down about what their tumor is doing – and I understand, it's horrible and you really have my sympathy and love – but it gets me down and worried about my future too.

So, as a counter to those, I got my half-time report for my post-op and Folfox treatment from the hospital yesterday, which was really positive. No noticeable recurrence or mets from the scans, CEA gone from 85ug at diagnosis in April to 9.5ug now with 6 rounds still to go. I'm doing a bit of first pumping with this as I see it all working as it should. What are other people's experiences after this stage – can I expect the tumor markers to reduce much further? Can we draw any conclusions about the rate of reduction or have people had similar and then sudden changes to look out for in the second half of treatment?

Of course, I'm really hoping that the trend continues and is the end of my cancer story. Even if I know this can potentially change in the future, I just wanted to put a tiny bit of positivity and encouragement out there for everyone else going through this. We keep going and we keep fighting this awful disease.
