UN General Assembly Widely Supports Nonbinding Palestinian Resolution Demanding Israel Leave Gaza And Occupied West Bank
In a resounding show of support for the Palestinian cause, the United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a nonbinding resolution demanding that Israel withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank.
The resolution, which was adopted by a vote of 156-6, with 12 abstentions, calls on Israel to "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and respect the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination."
The resolution also demands that Israel "end its occupation" of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, and "revoke all measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character, and status of the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem."
The resolution is nonbinding, meaning it is not legally enforceable, but it carries significant symbolic weight and could put pressure on Israel to reconsider its policies in the region.
The vote was seen as a major victory for the Palestinian leadership, which has been pushing for international recognition of its statehood and an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
"This resolution is a powerful message to the Israeli government that the international community will not stand idly by while it continues to occupy and oppress the Palestinian people," said Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki.
The resolution was sponsored by the Palestinian Authority and was supported by many countries, including most of the members of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
However, the resolution was opposed by Israel and several other countries, including the United States, Canada, and Australia.
"We cannot support a resolution that is based on a flawed and biased understanding of the conflict," said Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon. "We will continue to work with our allies to promote peace and stability in the region."
The resolution is the latest development in a long-standing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, which has seen several rounds of violence and diplomacy over the years.
