Hong Kong Man Jailed for ‘Seditious’ T-Shirt
A 24-year-old man in Hong Kong has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" during a protest in 2019.
The slogan, which was also used by the pro-democracy movement, was deemed "seditious" by the Hong Kong government, and the man was charged under the colonial-era law.
The court ruled that the slogan was "likely to bring hatred or contempt towards the government" and was therefore illegal.
The man, who was not named in local media reports, was arrested in August 2019 during a protest against a proposed extradition bill. He was later charged with inciting secession, which is a crime in Hong Kong.
The sentencing has sparked outrage among pro-democracy supporters, who say it is an example of the Hong Kong government’s increasing use of authoritarian tactics to silence dissent.
