Curious NJ Devils Sympathizer Sparks Controversy with Cap/ Roster Question

As the 2023-2024 NHL season approaches, one curious New Jersey Devils sympathizer has left fans reeling with a thought-provoking cap/roster question. The enthusiast, who wishes to remain anonymous, sparked a heated debate on social media and online forums with their query.

The Question

"What would be the most optimal way for the New Jersey Devils to allocate their remaining cap space, given their current roster and expected offseason moves?"

Devils Fans Divided

The question has sent shockwaves through the Devils community, with fans divided on the best course of action. Some argue that the team should focus on signing a top-tier free agent to bolster their scoring, while others believe that a more strategic approach would be to re-sign key restricted free agents or target affordable veterans.

The Fallout

The controversy has even reached the Devils’ official social media channels, with fans passionately defending their views and sharing their own hypothetical roster constructions. The hashtag #DevilsCapRoster has trended on Twitter, with fans eagerly awaiting the team’s official response.

Hey Devils fans! Although the Devils aren't my first team, I have a soft spot for them cause I'm Swiss and you guys employ practically half of our national team haha. I'm curious to hear NJ fans' opinions on the medium-long-term roster outlook on Defence. With currently almost 22M $ committed for the 26-27 season already and Hughes and Nemec needing new contracts in the meantime it might get a bit crowded (and expensive) on the blue line. You also have Casey and Silayev who might push for a spot pretty soon. How do you think the D will be handled in the next few years? Who do you definitely want to keep (outside of Luke I'd assume lol)?

  1. Hughes, Nemec, and Silayev are probably our future core.

Casey was largely being talked about as a trade piece for the past year or so by the fanbase and a lot of people were actually shocked when he signed his ELC.

Dougie and Pesce will probably stay their whole contract and just slowly be pushed further down the lineup.

Siegenthaler had a rough year last year and might end up on the trade block sooner rather than later unless he turns it around.

Silayev playing in Russia and then coming over later gives us our needed cap flexibility. By the time he comes over Dillon should be gone. We already have another forward prospect who is cooking in Russia and the Devils don’t exactly fear them not being able to come over.

  2. I could honestly see Dougie being moved next offseason or the season after. His NMC changes to a 10 team list and if his play keeps up, he would have interested parties. That would open up room for Hughes to get paid and take over 1D and leave room for future flexibility.

Downvoted for hockey discussion? Sweet what a fun forum.

  3. Surely Palat is going to have to be a casualty. Next season, his NMC clause goes to a 10-team trade list. 6M opened up right there is something this team will need for Hughes’ deal.

  4. Siegenthaler will be moved this off-season for cap purposes.

Palat will most likely be moved since his NMC changes to a M-NTC (10-team list)

That alone will net the team an additional $9.4m in cap space. Add that to the cap being expected to rise $3m/$4m gives the team a lot of wiggle room going into next year.

  5. Dougie is not going to be moved. His shot from the blue line is one of the best in the league. So many goals have been created in 22/23 season because of that shot from blue line. Missing Dougie last season did hurt a team big time.
