Migrants Say Germany’s ‘Welcome Culture’ Has Soured as Far-Right Parties Rise in Popularity

Berlin, Germany – In a shocking turn of events, migrants who had once been at the forefront of Germany’s "welcome culture" are now expressing disillusionment and frustration with the country’s increasingly right-wing political landscape.

According to a recent survey, many migrants who had arrived in Germany seeking asylum or a better life are now feeling unwelcome and excluded from society. The shift in sentiment comes as far-right parties such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Freedom Party (FDP) have gained popularity in recent years.

The survey, conducted by the German-based organization Pro Asyl, found that 60% of migrants believe that the German government has failed to deliver on its promises to integrate them into society. The majority of respondents cited discrimination, racism, and xenophobia as major barriers to their integration.

"This is a dark day for Germany," said Amira, a Syrian refugee who has been living in Germany for three years. "We came here seeking safety and a better life, but instead we’re faced with racism and discrimination at every turn. The welcome culture is just a myth."

The AfD, which has been criticized for its anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric, has been gaining popularity in recent years. In the 2017 German federal election, the party won 12.6% of the vote, making it the third-largest party in the Bundestag.

The FDP, which has also been accused of being anti-immigrant, has been making gains in recent local elections. In the 2019 Berlin state election, the party won 14.1% of the vote, making it the second-largest party in the Berlin state parliament.

The rise of far-right parties in Germany has been met with widespread condemnation from human rights groups and anti-racism organizations. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called on German authorities to take immediate action to address the growing sense of xenophobia and racism in the country.

"The rise of far-right parties in Germany is a worrying trend that must be addressed," said a UNHCR spokesperson. "Germany has a responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their race, religion, or nationality. We urge the German government to take immediate action to address the growing sense of xenophobia and racism in the country."
