The other pages appear normally across devices, it's only the home page that is having issues.
On my computer it looks like this:
Left column/right column look normally spaced
However, I had my husband check what it looks like on his computer, and it ends up with the left column smooshed and the right column extra wide:

I know it has something to do with people's different display settings. For example, my own display has the text set larger than normal because I have trouble reading small text. I'm guessing my husband's settings have it set to display very small text because it seems really zoomed out as you can see.
This seems to somehow be affecting the two column layout weirdly though. I've been troubleshooting by adjusting max-width and testing by zooming in and out on my computer, but if I'm afraid if I keep adjusting the max-width more, it's going to result in the navigation menu looking super smooshed on a "zoomed in" display (like my own computer).
Having trouble finding a happy medium for different displays and wondering if any of ya'll had some creative workarounds!

For your issue, the only solution is to not rely on viewport size as a measure of spacing, which you are. Your layout is very much different depending on if my browser is maximized or split across half my screen as I normally have it. What needs to be absolutely spaced, specify ems or pixels. Anything that shouldn’t, use percentages. Test everywhere, on multiple browsers and browser engines (both Blink/Chromium and Gecko/Firefox at a minimum), and test often.
