Breaking News: Unprecedented Flooding in Italy Disrupts Travel to Cinque Terre, Venice and Surrounding Regions

Date: March 15, 2023

A severe and ongoing flood emergency is impacting major tourist destinations in Italy, including Venice and Cinque Terre, with numerous travel routes and transportation options severely disrupted.

The City of Water, Venice, is facing one of the worst floods in recent memory, with waters reaching over 6 feet above the average high tide level, causing widespread damage and destruction. The city’s historic center is under severe risk of further flooding, and tourists are being advised to stay away until the situation stabilizes.

Cinque Terre, a popular destination on Italy’s west coast, has also been affected, with several villages and towns surrounding the national park flooded and inaccessible. The rugged coastal terrain has made rescue operations challenging, and residents are being evacuated to higher grounds.

Travelers who have booked tours or travel arrangements to these regions are urged to check with their service providers for updates on any cancellations or postponements. Flights and trains to Venice and Cinque Terre have been heavily impacted, with numerous schedule changes and disruptions reported.

Flood Emergency Unfolds

Italy is experiencing one of the worst flood events in its history, with heavy rainfall, high tides, and strong winds causing chaos in several regions. The following areas are particularly affected:

  1. Venice: The city’s canals have overflowed, causing extensive damage to properties, businesses, and tourist attractions. The iconic St. Mark’s Square and other major landmarks are severely flooded.
  2. Cinque Terre: Villages such as Monterosso, Vernazza, and Corniglia are cut off, with waters reaching over 3 feet above the sea level.
  3. Liguria Region: The towns of Portovenere, Sestri Levante, and Le Grazie are among the worst affected, with emergency services struggling to respond to the crisis.

Transportation Disruptions

Flights to and from Venice Marco Polo Airport have been heavily impacted, with several flight cancellations and schedule changes reported. Trains running between Venice and nearby cities, such as Trieste and Padua, are also experiencing disruptions.

Trenitalia, the national rail operator, has suspended some train services between Genoa and La Spezia, affecting travelers who were heading to Cinque Terre. Buses and coaches connecting these destinations are also facing significant disruptions.

Emergency Response and Safety

Emergency responders and rescue teams are working around the clock to assist stranded travelers, provide shelter for those displaced, and alleviate the flooding crisis.

  • The Italian Government has deployed troops to support relief efforts and maintain order in the affected areas.
  • Authorities are urging citizens and visitors to avoid traveling to affected regions unless absolutely necessary and to follow all safety guidelines and instructions.
  • Warnings of flood risks, rough seas, and landslides have been issued by local authorities, with severe weather conditions expected to persist in the coming days.

Staying Safe in Italy During the Flood Crisis

  1. Check official government sources for the latest updates and travel advisories.
  2. Register with your local authorities and tour operator to receive critical updates on travel arrangements.
  3. Avoid traveling to affected regions unless necessary and take alternative routes where possible.
  4. Stay informed about local weather conditions and potential dangers.
  5. Respect instructions from authorities and follow safety guidelines.

Hi all, my partner and I fly out to visit Italy on septber 27th.

We are going Lake Como > Venice> Cinque terre>Florence>Rome

I just saw the news about the flooding – we will be transiting from Venice to Cinque Terre on Oct 3, and I believe the route we are taking passes from Venice into Florence then to CT.

How will the flooding impact our trip? Specifically, I am worried about if it impacts us going to venice, and also transiting through towards Florence up to CT.

Any advice would be great – thank you!
