BREAKING: Sri Lanka Swears In New Left-Leaning President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Steps Down, Wickremesinghe Takes Office

Colombo, Sri Lanka – June 20, 2023 – Sri Lanka’s opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe took the oath of office today, becoming the country’s ninth president since independence from Britain in 1948.

Wickremesinghe, a staunch Leftist and leader of the United National Party, will lead the country towards stability and growth, overcoming the economic crisis that plagued his predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government. Rajapaksa resigned on May 9 after months of protest and political turmoil following Sri Lanka’s worst financial crisis in over 60 years.

In a swearing-in ceremony at the Sella Kataragama Rajamaha Vihara Buddhist temple in Colombo, Wickremesinghe took the oath administered by Chief Justice Jayasinghe Bandara Perera in the presence of fellow government officials, opposition members of parliament, and clergy members.

"We will continue the efforts to stabilize the country’s economy and achieve unity among the people. Sri Lanka is a developing nation and needs the guidance and support of the United States, India, the International Monetary Fund, the European Union, and China for its growth," said Wickremesinghe after being sworn in.

Under President Wickremesinghe’s leadership, the island nation of 21 million people will focus on finding a long-term solution to its debt crisis by revising the country’s spending habits and increasing cooperation with international financial institutions and multilateral lenders.

Born into a family of farmers and traders, Wickremesinghe, aged 73, has more than three decades of parliamentary experience, including serving twice as the Prime Minister, leading the government from 2015 to 2018 and 2002-2004.
