My sister and I will be in Barcelona next month and would like to take a couple of walking tours. I did a few free walking tours (and tipped of course) in Paris and really enjoyed seeing things at that pace. Does anyone have favorite walking tours or companies to recommend?

Also, we booked this trip before the over tourism issue in Barcelona really caught the news this summer. Any advice on being a good guest of the city? We chose a traditional hotel after hearing the issues with vacation rentals and we will be relying on public transit to get around rather than adding a car to the streets. I get that walking tours and such will make us obvious tourists, but we want to at least be polite tourists.

ETA: I mean specific advice for Barcelona. We try to be polite tourists normally but I know different locations have different unique concerns.

  1. I did some “free” (tip only) walking tours in Barcelona and while they were ok, I would have just paid for an actual tour if I could do it again. Some of the guides weren’t even Spanish but you didn’t know that until you got divvied up into the group. When I looked at other groups, they could hear their guided better and it just seemed much more professional and well done.

  2. Never took a walking tour but was in Barcelona this summer for about a week and I can tell you it’s one of the most walkable cities I’ve been to. We walked the entire city, built our own Goudi tour, library crawl, bar crawl, neighbourhoods to see, etc. There’s a lot of resources on YouTube and Google. I personally find walking on my own and taking my own sweet time makes the walk/tour more fun. But that’s just me.

October is a great time to visit. Best of luck in Barcelona and have fun!
