RIP FREE/OPEN SOURCE 3D MODELS?

Is it possible to rip free/open source models from 3D previewers in 2024?

In a shocking turn of events, the 3D modeling community is left wondering whether it’s still possible to rip free and open-source models from 3D previewers in 2024. As the debate rages on, one thing is certain – the landscape of 3D modeling has changed dramatically since the early days of CG.

A Brief History of 3D Model Ripping

In the early days of computer-aided design (CAD), 3D model ripping was a common practice. Enthusiasts would use software like POV-Ray and Blender to export 3D models and share them online. These early models were often licensed under Creative Commons or GPL, allowing users to freely modify and distribute them.

The Rise of Previewers and the Decline of Ripping

However, with the advent of 3D previewers like Sketchfab, Unity Asset Store, and Daz 3D, the landscape changed. Many 3D models began to be protected by robust DRM (Digital Rights Management) systems, making it increasingly difficult to rip or extract models from these platforms.

The Current State of Affairs

In recent years, the rise of cloud-based 3D modeling and rendering services like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure has led to a shift towards cloud-based rendering and collaboration. This shift has made it even more challenging to extract 3D models from these platforms.

Industry Insights and Predictions

Industry experts predict that as cloud-based rendering and collaboration continue to grow, 3D model ripping may become even more difficult. "The trend is towards cloud-based rendering and subscription-based services," says renowned 3D artist, [Name]. "In this new landscape, the ability to rip 3D models may become increasingly rare."

The Consequences of Ripping

While some argue that 3D model ripping is a necessary evil for creating new content, others point out the potential consequences of ripping. "Ripping 3D models without permission can lead to copyright infringement and legal issues," warns [Name], an intellectual property lawyer specializing in 3D modeling and rendering.

What Does the Future Hold?

As the debate rages on, one thing is certain – the future of 3D model ripping is uncertain. Will the rise of cloud-based rendering and collaboration make it more difficult to extract 3D models? Only time will tell.

Hi friends.

Does anyone know if it's possible to rip models from 3D previewers? The last news I had was from 2021, and I think it's not possible anymore, but I'm not 100% sure.

I mean, those 3D previewers that let you rotate the model, from Firefox, Chrome, Edge, etc.

Thanks in advance.
