I have worked in a team as a social worker for almost 5 years. It's a small team in the local authority. In January 2024 a plan was made regarding my career progression and promotion to happen by 2025 as long as certain things had been evidenced. I have worked my absolute arse off to manage my actual job AND evidence my skill set above my job role to provide evidence for promotion, all well and good. Got the news that a team member is being promoted to manager leaving their previous post vacant. I assumed this was for my promotion however I have been informed that role is changing to the same band as myself and the manager is now recruiting for the post- rather than offering the existing vacant post as a vacancy the peramiter of the job has changed and it's now on the same banding as my current job. My issue is, although I work in the LA I work in a very specialised role which has taken years to perfect. My manager now expects me to train up this new staff member sharing my knowledge and skills with them to upskill the new worker however, they will be paid the exact same as myself and our job roles will be the exact same. I wonder do I have an arguement here to push for the promotion? I am the top of my current pay band and it will take a minimum of 18 months for me to train this new worker with the same knowledge I have but can I refuse? Surely this is above my pay band and I should receive a pay that's fair to my job role? Just wondering what you would do if this was you? If I can evidence I'm doing the work of a band higher can I have a case to request a pay rise? I'm seriously considering leaving the team following this as I have been at the top of my pay scale for a couple years now and there's no other way I can progress if this manager won't promote me.

  2. you have no legal argument to push for promotion, that sup to the employer

    you can refuse to train them, but i would imagine that would be a very quick route to disciplainary action against yourself
