Committee Chooses 8 Active Volcanoes for Further Study
In a move to better understand and prepare for volcanic eruptions, a special committee has selected eight active volcanoes in Japan for further study and monitoring.
According to a statement released by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on [DATE], the committee, comprising experts from the JMA, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, has identified the eight volcanoes as priorities for intensified research and surveillance.
The selected volcanoes are:
- Mt. Sakurajima, Kagoshima Prefecture: Known for its frequent and powerful eruptions, Mt. Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan.
- Mt. Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture: Aso’s largest eruption in 1974 sent ash and pyroclastic flows thousands of feet into the air.
- Mt. Suwa, Nagano Prefecture: Located in the Japanese Alps, Suwa has shown increased seismicity in recent years.
- Mt. Komagatake, Niigata Prefecture: Komagatake’s periodic eruptions have impacted the surrounding area.
- Mt. Asama, Gunma Prefecture: Asama has a long history of frequent eruptions, with its last significant eruption occurring in 1783.
- Mt. Usu, Hokkaido: Usu has shown signs of increased unrest in recent years, including frequent small-scale eruptions.
- Mt. Sakuradake, Tochigi Prefecture: Sakuradake’s periodic eruptions have threatened nearby towns.
- Mt. Tokachidake, Hokkaido: Tokachidake has exhibited increased seismicity and gas emissions in recent years.
The committee’s decision aims to enhance the nation’s ability to predict and prepare for volcanic eruptions, minimizing the risks to life, property, and infrastructure. The research and monitoring will focus on:
- Increasing the accuracy of volcanic activity forecasts
- Developing new technologies for detecting early signs of volcanic unrest
- Enhancing the country’s emergency response capabilities
This breaking news is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
