New Zealand’s Health System Under Fire: Senior Politicians Claim Dunedin Hospital Too Expensive
Yesterday, in a shocking revelation, National Party’s Chris Bishop and ACT Party’s Shane Reti stated that they cannot afford to upgrade Dunedin Hospital due to the potential impact on other regional hospitals. This declaration has sent shockwaves throughout the country, leaving many wondering about the future of New Zealand’s healthcare system.
According to the two senior politicians, any extra dollar spent on upgrading Dunedin Hospital would compromise the services offered by other regional hospitals. This alarming claim has sparked heated debates about the priorities of the New Zealand government and its commitment to providing quality healthcare to all citizens.
This news comes at a time when Dunedin Hospital is in dire need of upgrading. The hospital has been struggling with outdated facilities, limited staff, and outdated equipment, which has led to concerns about patient safety and care.
The situation has raised questions about the government’s priorities and its willingness to invest in regional hospitals. Many are left wondering why the government cannot find a way to allocate resources effectively to ensure that all regional hospitals receive the necessary funding.

So I'm here to tell you that just the other day David Seymour, when asked about our investment in ferries, said this:
"[NZ has a] shortage of money…The government is broke too, I'm afraid to say, and every time we spend a dollar on a ferry we can't spend it on a classroom or a hospital."
And then when faced with the Dunedin hospital build, they use the line:
'We don't have enough money, every dollar spent here means we can't spend it on other regional hospitals'
So do you see? It's a circle of blame and excuse.
- Did you know that they claim Health NZ is overspending despite intentionally underfunding it? So Health doesn't get enough overall.
And basically everything is a circle of excuses.
Yesterday Stanford said she had to cut teacher Te Reo Maori classes because they didn't have enough for books? So where is the money going?
How odd.
- They just gave $153m for charter schools
- $215 million to tobacco company Philip Morris
- $14bn of tax cuts – most of which went to the wealthies
- Hundreds of millions to people with trusts
- They said they're going to spend $70bn on roads
Finally, RNZ reported it was very odd last month when after looking at Nelson hospital, they changed the plans for the large hospital build to smaller ones despite little cost savings, and yesterday I realised why.
They did not want it to be precedent for Dunedin Hospital. They were always going to can it – it was obvious as soon as they were elected (I follow the news and communications closely)
No-one can say they aren't forward thinking on what matters – to them

more fiscal immaturity and wasteful spending from the coalition of chaos it’s a bloody pisstake
This government wants to turn NZ into the USA. As an American who has lived in both countries, I urge you to take action before it’s too late.
Giving tax breaks to the wealthy and then borrowing billions? Peter Thiel and his creepy billionaire tech bros will own NZ forever.
Honestly, you do **not** want to live through what we’re going through here, but I fear you are doomed to repeat our history.
The no solution govt
– Break up 3 waters – no solution
– Break up the polytechs – no solution
– the ferry’s – no solution
– the hospital- no solution
– housing – no solution
– benifits – no solution
Distraction distractions.
They will bitch about labour spending when it actually tries solutions – distraction “you’re not supposed to see that!”
These people are robbing taxpayers blind. All of that money that should be making sure our people are healthy, educated, well-fed, and have a roof over their heads is being funnelled into the pockets of the wealthy
It’s political theatre, stop expecting it to be consistent and make sense. Public health just isn’t high on their priorities
