Israel ‘Spreading Terror’, Lebanon’s PM Tells UN Security Council
In a dramatic address to the United Nations Security Council, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati accused Israel of "spreading terror" and "violating international law" in its ongoing attacks on Lebanon.
Mikati’s scathing rebuke came as the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting to address the escalating crisis between Israel and Lebanon. The Lebanese leader demanded that Israel cease its "aggressive actions" and respect the sovereignty of his country.
"The Israeli aggression is a threat to regional and international peace and security," Mikati told the council. "Israel is spreading terror, violating international law, and disregarding the rights of the Lebanese people."
The tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been simmering for weeks, with both sides exchanging fire across the border. The situation escalated earlier this week when Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Lebanese targets, including a major port facility.
Lebanon has responded with its own rocket attacks on Israeli territory, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes. The violence has left several people dead and many more injured on both sides.
Mikati’s address to the UN Security Council was met with widespread condemnation of Israel’s actions. Many council members echoed Mikati’s calls for Israel to cease its aggression and respect the sovereignty of Lebanon.
The United States, however, took a more nuanced approach, urging both sides to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table. "We condemn the violence and call on all parties to refrain from further escalation," said US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
The crisis has raised concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further escalation. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
