Man Arrested for Allegedly Spray-Painting Pro-Palestinian Slogans on War Memorial and ABC Buildings in Canberra
A 35-year-old man has been taken into custody by Australian Federal Police (AFP) for allegedly spray-painting pro-Palestinian slogans on the Australian War Memorial and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) buildings in Canberra on Tuesday morning.
The AFP received reports of the graffiti at around 5:30 am, and upon investigation, found that the words "Free Palestine" and "Boycott Israel" had been sprayed on the buildings using bright red paint. The Australian War Memorial is a revered national institution dedicated to honoring the country’s military history, while the ABC is a public broadcaster and a symbol of Australian journalism.
The arrested man, who has not been named, is believed to have acted alone and was caught on CCTV footage leaving the scene. He was taken to a nearby police station for questioning and is expected to face charges related to the vandalism.
"This kind of behavior is unacceptable and has no place in our community," said an AFP spokesperson. "We will work closely with our partners to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions."
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from politicians and community leaders, with many calling for swift and severe punishment for the perpetrator.
"This is a shocking and disgusting act of vandalism that has no place in our nation’s capital," said Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. "We will do everything in our power to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice."
The Australian Jewish Community Council (AJCC) also condemned the incident, stating that "such actions have the potential to create fear and division in our community."
The incident has raised concerns about the rise of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel sentiment in Australia, and has sparked a renewed focus on the need for increased security measures at sensitive institutions.
