Blue Line shooting highlights increased violence for unhoused
A shooting on the CTA Blue Line earlier this week has left two people injured, and residents are sounding the alarm about the growing violence faced by those experiencing homelessness in Evanston.
According to police reports, the shooting occurred on Wednesday evening when two men got into an altercation and shots were fired. The victims, both in their 30s, were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover.
This incident is just the latest in a string of violent incidents involving individuals experiencing homelessness in Evanston. In recent months, there have been multiple reports of physical altercations, property damage, and intimidation between homeless individuals and police officers.
"I’m worried about the safety of my clients," said Sarah Jones, a social worker at the local non-profit, Haven. "They’re already dealing with so much trauma and instability, and the last thing they need is to be caught in the middle of a violent altercation."
Jones and other advocates say that the lack of affordable housing and social services is exacerbating the problem.
"Evanston needs to step up and provide more support for its most vulnerable residents," said City Councilor, Peter Braithwaite. "We can’t just sweep this under the rug and pretend it’s not happening. We need to work together to find solutions."
As the city continues to grapple with the issue of homelessness, residents are urging the city to take immediate action to address the crisis.
