How are AD assassins doing this patch? Let’s look at the changes and consider if they are hitting the stated goals.

This is the outline for the changes we were given in the patch notes:

https://preview.redd.it/4l9xiczlscrd1.png?width=604&format=png&auto=webp&s=ff3626c4f0b61282e4e66989baf110c1db7ccb74

We can see they stated they wanted to primarily nerf Assassins through haste, recognizing that they need to be able to kill a target quickly and avoid retaliation. Is this what happened?

Umbral Glaive, Voltaic Cyclosword, Hubris, Profane Hydra and Axiom Arc lost haste. So far so good.

https://preview.redd.it/fal2nptmscrd1.png?width=621&format=png&auto=webp&s=ba279c052f379264ac09a6b3b6edc9ad78da7dde

Hydra was nerfed down to an 80% AD ratio from 100/130. This is a large damage nerf, but was probably warranted considering how much of an outlier it was in terms of strength. They have also stated they wanted to focus on “playing the champion, not playing the item,” and this is consistent with that.

If that was the end, then perhaps: mission accomplished. But it didn’t stop there. Voltaic Cyclosword and Youmuu’s Ghostblade increased in cost by 100g, Edge of Night by 200g. This is essentially a 3, 6 AD nerf before full build.

https://preview.redd.it/384n6kcnscrd1.png?width=518&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc742a3f5f08dd1ae07b97d519ae56bd4cdb06e0

Opportunity Lost 5 AD and up to 3 Lethality.

But perhaps the biggest loser of all, Serylda’s Grudge:

Its 15 Lethality was removed completely and its full build Armor Penetration went down, not up, by about 5%. On first glance, it got 3 compensation buffs:

Cost down by 200g

Base Armor Pen up 5%

AH up 5

The cost reduction is valuable (6 AD) if you buy it early, but as a % Pen item, it’s tilted towards a later purchase. At full build, the price doesn’t matter.

The base armor pen is up by 5%, but even in isolation that’s overselling it because it gained 1.6% from its own Lethality before. If you had 2 other Lethality items, it was already over 30%. Full build it was around 35% depending on what exactly you built.

Looking over the totality of these changes, it looks the nerfs were just as focused on damage as they were on haste.

If this is the goal, the cost of items should be going down, not up. Cheap, early power spikes that get outscaled by more expensive Marksmen/Mage/Bruiser items in a full build.

Increasing the cost of items tilts them to late game and theoretically improves their “slot efficiency” when holding gold efficiency constant.

As an addendum let’s take a look at Eclipse:

https://preview.redd.it/4umzotypscrd1.png?width=621&format=png&auto=webp&s=1fecbd76259eaa9e5cd54dc9b31bd31b819ddafa

While it deserved nerfs like any other item, the scale is clearly off. It’s total relative gold value decreased by 450 which is 14-16% depending on how you calculate it:

https://preview.redd.it/j3xrxsiqscrd1.png?width=176&format=png&auto=webp&s=22dec1e965e3dfba2b3ef7fcbc4fa0c4eef1a0b4

This is out of line from the stated range:

https://preview.redd.it/juwbovzqscrd1.png?width=620&format=png&auto=webp&s=72a05d2e9dce436ad3cb84fb3cf3c4971055bb72

We can also see it’s win rate suffered the most among the most popular items:

This is especially concerning because it also lost win rate. Most of the items that lost win rate, gained pick rate, which is somewhat causal (items bought more frequently are bought earlier, which always have lower win rates than items bought later).

It now features one of only 5 negative win rates in the game:

  1. Eclipse wasn’t really an assassin item for a while now, it’s passive makes zero sense on them, they only build it because it was completely overtuned – and it was nerfed so hard for the very same reason.

The only really concerning change is Grudge IMO, previous iteration was a fuked design trying to squeeze too many identities into one item, but now that it is more focused ass assins don’t really have enough penetration late.
