UK: Refuse Workers Have Lucky Escape after Lorry Explosion

Five refuse workers had a lucky escape early this morning in the UK after a lorry they were inspecting suddenly exploded, according to eyewitnesses.

The workers, employed by local council waste management services, were attending to a malfunctioning vehicle in a parking area at the M6 junction when the accident occurred at approximately 9:15am.

"Everyone’s been shaken, but amazingly no one was seriously hurt," said Inspector John Taylor from Cheshire Constabulary. "It’s incredible given the sheer force of the explosion."

The vehicle in question was a diesel lorry used for refuse collection, and investigators have established that it was transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the time of the blast. The lorry, belonging to waste management firm Wilsons Environmental, is still being treated as the origin of the explosion, as officials scramble to understand what caused it.

Neighbors, who live nearby the busy motorway, heard a loud explosion followed by chaos as debris and fire spewed forth from the burning vehicle.

"I heard an enormous boom and my cat ran scared," said Janet Thompson, a nearby resident. "When I got outside, I could hardly believe what I saw – flames licking at the building, smoke everywhere."

Luckily, firefighters and ambulance personnel responded promptly, allowing everyone involved to be transported to nearby hospitals for immediate attention.

"I was only steps away when it went up," recalled worker Andrew Miller. "We knew instantly to get as far back from the wreckage as we could. No one seemed worse for wear, aside from maybe the shock. It was definitely a wake-up call, though – you take health and safety for granted, don’t you?"

Experts from various agencies have descended upon the scene, commencing a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, local officials continue to cooperate with those investigations, pledging an assurance of their full assistance and support to the impacted residents and the waste management personnel.

This is still developing news – we’ll update you with further updates and details as more information comes to hand.
