‘The worst moment the country has passed through’: Fear on the streets of Beirut

[Beirut, Lebanon] – As the situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate, residents of Beirut are living in fear, with many describing the current state of the country as the "worst moment" they have ever experienced.

The past few days have seen widespread protests and clashes between security forces and protesters, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The economic crisis has worsened, with the Lebanese pound plummeting to a record low against the US dollar, making it difficult for people to access basic necessities like food and medicine.

"I have never seen anything like this before," said Rania, a 35-year-old mother of two. "The streets are filled with tear gas, and the sound of gunfire is constant. I’m too scared to leave my house, I don’t know what will happen next."

The government has been criticized for its handling of the crisis, with many calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Hassan Diab. The international community has also been vocal in its condemnation of the violence, with the United Nations calling for an end to the bloodshed.

"The situation in Lebanon is dire, and it’s heartbreaking to see innocent people caught in the crossfire," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. "We urge all parties to work towards a peaceful resolution and to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Lebanese people."

As the situation continues to unfold, residents of Beirut are left to wonder what the future holds. "I just want to be able to provide for my family and live in peace," said Ali, a 28-year-old construction worker. "But with the economy in shambles and the government in disarray, I’m not sure if that’s possible."
