Disturbing Reality Exposed: 92% of Workers Cleaning Sewer and Septic Tanks in India Come from Disadvantaged Sections of Society

Mumbai, India – In a shocking revelation, it has been found that an overwhelming 92% of workers engaged in the perilous task of cleaning sewer and septic tanks in India hail from the country’s disadvantaged sections of society. This disturbing statistic highlights the stark reality of poverty, inequality, and the lack of opportunities for millions of Indians.

According to a recent study conducted by a leading non-governmental organization (NGO), the majority of workers employed in this hazardous profession come from marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). These workers are often forced to navigate treacherous sewer systems and septic tanks without proper protective gear, exposing them to severe health risks and a high probability of fatalities.

"The exploitation of these workers is staggering," said a spokesperson for the NGO. "It’s a stark reminder of the deep-seated issues of casteism and socioeconomic inequality that plague our country. These workers are essentially forced to choose between their health and their livelihoods, and it’s an outrage that we continue to turn a blind eye to their plight."

The report also highlights the lack of formal employment opportunities and poor working conditions that drive people from disadvantaged backgrounds to accept these hazardous jobs. "The lack of decent work opportunities and the absence of social protection mechanisms push vulnerable individuals into these hazardous jobs, perpetuating a vicious cycle of poverty and exploitation," added the spokesperson.

  1. Well, we are one of the only third-world countries manually cleaning septic tanks even in this day and era. No one deserves to clean em manually, it all needs to be automated with machinery with minimum human intervention, we have all the tech today, bring the tech to India and implement it in all cities, then no group needs to be involved in having to clean it manually.

  2. In memory of George Carlin who believed you could joke about everything –

    1. RaGa should be proud, finally one area where jitni abadi utna haq mil raha. Maybe zyada hi.

    2. This will be the first job where government can consider giving reverse reservation to upper castes. Isme reserved category wale bhi support karenge I’m sure.

    3. What if government actually does start a sewer cleaning department with all the government pay and benefit? Kya reserved category wale usme reservation chahenge? Kya general category wale uss reservation ke against bhi bolenge?

  3. I know a community nearby in u.p
They clean sewers by getting into them getting submerged till neck.
They are given govt job to clean village choked sewers, that the reservation they getting.a fix govt job to do most dangerous work which puts em prone to diseases
No general category aspirant fights for their cozy govt job.funny right
U need job? Try that, all yours

  4. Which means that reservation in the current form has failed miserably and has just created upper classes within reserved caste groups.

There has to be a cap on how many times a family can use reservation benefits and truly marginalised people need to be given first right on reservations.

  5. nobody is being forced to do such jobs, they are doing it on their own accord, if everyone refuses to do this, government will be forced to implement machinery for such tasks, which i think will be better for everyone, whats the point of this post?

  6. What stupid post is this. There is immense cartels that operate in these particular sectors they don’t accept anyone outside their community taking their jobs. A few years back they allowed a few general people to come into these jobs and there were immense protests against these.

The author of the article has no idea what kinda jobs are appropriated by whom and which communities

  7. I am OBC , and who forced them to take the jobs? No one. Don’t do it. Do something else . Who’s stopping you? Let the poor upper caste do it .

They won’t show how many disadvantaged section are highly paid officals. My friend ST is Medical officer got passed with very low cut off for reservation. Now nakes millions.

They won’t show a person I know who is dalit got a bank job without any interview or exam .

    Just cry over being disadvantaged.
