I’m 25F, and have finally gathered courage to run away from my toxic, controlling household which never even lets me step out of the house, leave alone let me get a job or pursue my dreams.
My primary aim at the moment is to get a job as soon as possible. But due to being trapped in the house for years, I have zero work experience. I also don’t have a very ‘easily-employable’ degree, being naive back then, pursuing something which I loved instead of something that would have helped me get out of this place better. I hold a degree in English Honours with high distinction, and have an excellent academic record throughout school too, being one of the city toppers in the 12th board exams. (I know these things don’t really count in the cut-throat job industry out there.)
As I’m not a fresher, this huge career gap with no work experience at all is not going to help my case. To make matters worse, I cannot give any interviews (not even online ones for remote jobs) until I’m still in this house, as my mother is literally ALWAYS around, in hearing-range. I also am not allowed to have a bank account or a phone of my own or important documents like a PAN card/Voter ID/Driving License/Passport, so one of these things usually hinder my efforts at freelancing or trying to do any kind of work online to save some money.
Would you guys be kind enough to guide me to any employers/companies/organisations which may take my situation into account and hire me like a fresher? Or ones which are not very hung up on certain amount of qualifications or years of experience, and are willing to hire people if they prove their skills? I’m willing to work without a salary initially, so they can confirm me later if they believe in my work quality and ethics.
I am aiming to pursue skill-development courses and higher degrees later to become more relevant in the career industry. However, I desperately need any kind of a job right now to sustain myself, since I’m starting from base-zero. So, any help, contacts, guidance would be much appreciated. I don’t possess a lot of technical skills, but I have a relatively shorter learning curve and would be more than willing to learn them. For now, some of my interests and skills include:
- Teaching: I don’t hold a teaching qualification as my parents believe that ‘teaching is beneath their status’ but I pride myself in being someone who can bring out the joy of learning even for students who aren’t very interested in it. I’m someone who is constantly thinking of more innovative and interactive ways to make the classroom a place students look forward to. I used to volunteer back at university and have taught underprivileged adults as well as children, receiving very positive feedback. I know there is no way schools and universities would take me without teaching qualifications and experience, but if there are NGOs or coachings or tutoring services who would be willing to give me a chance, I could definitely prove my skills there.
- Writing, editing and translation services: I realise that there are lesser avenues for this with AI taking a seat, but if any brands/news or media-houses would be willing to hire me for quality content generation, I would be very grateful. I’m known for a content style which is creative and witty, possessing the quality of grabbing readers’ attention instead of generic ones. I’m also good at fiction/poetry, so writing scripts/dialogues could be something I could do as well. I do possess hawk-eyed editing skills as well, so if someone knows publishing companies or the like, who need a good assistant editor, that would be wonderful. I don’t possess a translation degree, but I have usually been told to have a natural sense of translation-skill which maintains both the aesthetic and intent of the text.
- Social work: I’m someone who enjoys working at the ground-level and trying to make people’s lives better, helping them with issues. So, I believe I do have the soft skills required for NGOs and social-sector organisations, though I don’t have a social-work degree.
- Not sure of which industries/sectors would find a practical value in this, but I possess excellent speaking skills, public or otherwise.
- I don’t have an MBA, but I have good managerial/administrative/organisation skills in general, and possess a very high attention-to-detail quality. Any kind of work handed to me is known for being extremely structured and detailed. So, any hands-on work experience in a business would be wonderful, if possible.
I know these skills amount to peanuts, because the employment crisis is real out there, and people with much much higher skills and experience than me are unable to find a job. But if anyone has any kind of advice for me, I would forever be indebted.
P.S: I completely acknowledge that I should have left my house long ago instead of wasting my time, but –
- Considering my parents’ influence and connections, I felt that the authorities would also help them in forcefully bringing me back, putting me in a worse situation. (As some of my relatives work in the police and administration)
- My hyper-controlling mother also believes in honour killing or injuring one’s child if they do not obey their parents as an adult. She is also not really afraid of going to jail, which makes matters much worse. So, considering all of these, I didn’t know how to get out, not wanting to put those lives in trouble who would take the risk of helping me.
So, falling into the vicious depression spiral, I had gotten into the zone of ‘bearing it out’, waiting to die. It took me forever to realise that if I would die anyway, why don’t I die fighting for my freedom? So, here I am, finally trying to get out with the help of an organisation. It’s still very risky, but I have some hope left in me. :’)
Thank you so very much for reading such a long post, and trying to help, it means the world to me. <3

What other languages are you good in?
Hey since you don’t have a phone and are not allowed to hold legal documents how are you even planning to give an interview for a job. Even for an internship you have to submit these docs. And suppose you do get a job how do you plan to get out of the house. I am just curious
Dear Friend,
I can understand your pain , but probably not your position.
I am keeping you in prayer, and i am confident God will give you peace , even as you deal with the multiple problems in your life.
With a degree in English literature, you have a variety of career options where you can leverage your skills in writing, communication, critical thinking, and analysis. Here are some career paths you might consider:

Where do you put up?
Do you have educational documents with you?
Before you do anything, get yourself a Aadhaar, PAN card, mobile number you own and a bank account. It is very important to apply for these!
Job hunt is tough. Reading your post, you sound pretty good at writing, so use that to your advantage. Writing in english is not an easy skill so kudos for that.
First you need to have a portfolio of prior work for people to find you. Choose an avenue to self publish, e.g. a blog (with ads and monetization), or substack, set a goal to write and publish once a week. Reddit has a writing prompt community and can give you ideas. Choose topics that people want to read.
For jobs, you can try to register yourself with editorial agencies, especially science communication is big these days. if you want to go out the freelancing route, start reaching out to potential folks for jobs, translation has become a great business these days, if you know a youtube channel and they don’t have english subtitles, just reach out and see if they want to grow their audience.
You can help people learn english, by joining language exchange programs like hellotalk. not sure how much they pay.
lastly something I’ve been trying out is self publishing childrens books using AI, e.g. https://www.createbookai.com/. you can easily setup a publishing company through amazon without much hassle.
Plan small tasks, achieve them and you will find motivation to do great things.
Nice drama so your hyper controlling mother never checks your phone and you can write such a long post easily.
So what do your parents want you to do? On one hand they let you Do a graduation degree and on the other you are saying they don’t let you even out of the house and always at a ear shot distance
