Reddit Proposed Distribution Model Shift to Increase Engagement and Fairness: "Equal Rewards for Equal Engagement"

In a bold move to revitalize user engagement and promote content discovery, Reddit has tabled a proposal to shake up its distribution model by introducing equal rewards for English post and comment authors.

The proposed change, first shared on the Reddit Moderators subreddit, aims to align the reward structure for both posts and comments on the platform, ensuring equal engagement opportunities for all content creators.

Key points of the proposal:

  • Post and comment karma rewards will be equal in value, with a shared reward pool.
  • Author reputation will be based on a combination of post and comment karma.
  • Changes will be rolled out globally for English language content on the platform.
  • Users will have a 28-day window to adapt their content strategy and optimize engagement before the changes take effect.

The reasoning behind the proposal:

"The current distribution model has a skewed reward structure, disproportionately favoring post authors while neglecting the valuable role of comment authors in discussion and community growth," the proposal states. "Equalizing rewards will incentivize more users to engage and contribute to discussions, while promoting a healthier and more sustainable community ecosystem."

The proposed change has sparked fervent debate among Reddit enthusiasts, with some hailing it as a long-awaited game-changer for fairness and engagement, while others argue it will lead to increased spam and decreased diversity of content.

Social Media Reactions:

"I’m so down for this! It’s crazy how much more attention a well-crafted comment thread can get than a dedicated post" – u/j0hnsmith

"Don’t do it, Reddit! This will just let spam bots run wild " – u/skepticle1

"About time! I’ve always noticed the disparity in rewards… Now let’s see this become a reality" – u/tech_grrrl

PROBLEM
Currently, the monthly Donut distribution allocates 540K for posts and 370K for comments. Since the reward ratio for posts is higher than for comments, users are incentivized to make as many posts as possible to earn more rewards. This often results in low quality and irrelevant news links being posted.

PROPOSAL
Change the distribution model to equalize the rewards for posts and comments. This means every tip-upvote on a post or comment will carry the same weight in earning Donut rewards.
For reference, in the last round, the ratio for comments was 9.59, while for posts it was 19.98. If we implemented this proposal in that round, both posts and comments would likely have had a ratio of 14.78.

ADVANTAGES
\* Slows down the rat race, helping to keep the feed clean.
* Reduces low-effort news links and improves the overall quality of the sub.
* Simplifies the distribution model.
* Removes the need for multipliers.

DISADVANTAGES
* OC may lose the 2x multiplier. This can be addressed by implementing a small bonus for original content (OC).
* What else?

CHOICES

[NO]

  2. Respectfully [NO]

    Posts get removed for being duplicates, 75% AI generated and to cap it all we Pay2Post. I will only agree to it if the same penalty measures are applied to comments

  3. to be honest bro , i am just done with proposals .. i feel like we are adding new rules every other round just for sake of adding rules .

    I think we should just Chill out and relax and move forward with more development instead of adding rules every round

  4. For me it’s an [ABSTAIN] for now. Honestly idk why they are not the same to begin with! But I need to think this one through.

    However, the rat race won’t stop and feed won’t become more ”clean” the daily posters are gonna keep posting like before, 3 posts per day. Trust me.
