So, I've been shallow diving into the rabbit hole that is King Arthur's children in Arthurian Legend and found out that, surprisingly, he has quite a few.
Now, obviously, in Fate canon, there are no indications that Artoria had any other children other than Mordred, except Proto-Arthur who stated that he had daughters but never elaborated further. Meanwhile, in Arthurian Legends, Arthur had a lot of illegitimate children (and one legitimate) ofwhicht the most interesting ones I'll explain in brief.
-
Amr, a son from old, pre-mythology sources who Arthur killed for unknown reasons.
-
Gwydre and Duran, two sons who each had only one mention in two different poems, with Duran dying during the Battle of Camlann
-
Llachaeu, whose status as Arthur's son is more of an aforementioned who appears in a poem, and Loholt, a figure appearing in the Vulgate cycle (a series of stories and poems describing Lancelot-Grail quest, including The Death of Arthur, which served as the basis of Fate Arthurian Legend if I understand it correctly) inspired by Llachaeu. Loholt is notable because he's the only legitimate son of Arthur's, though considering how, in that version, Kay killed him in cold blood and the news of his death killed Guinevere, I don't think he can fit in Fate since it contradicts too much. Borre, a later iteration of Loholt on the other hand, could fit into Fate, as he's yet another bastard son conceived in a tryst arranged by Merlin who died young imprisoned in a tower as Lancelot was too late to save him.
-
Arthur the Less, a bastard son conceived when Arthur raped a maiden, who is the only one in this list to both live to a relatively old age and have a decent amount of story behind him. He actually appears post Vulgate cycle, that is to say his most notable actions are after Arthur was killed at Camlann. He outlived Arthur and most of the Knight of The Round Table, and was actually suggested as an heir to the throne in the stories, though refused to pursue revenge against Lancelot, who he felt was the cause of the kingdom's downfall (not entirely untrue), only to die in the process, cursing the land with his dying breath (which came to fruition when King Mark invaded and destroyed Camelot).
There were also daughters, but their mentions are scarce, with two being mentioned in old Welsh poems.
I want to know how do you feel about their potential as additions to Fate Arthurian mythology. I don't think it's too far-fetched for Artoria to have more, unmentioned children if Proto-Arthur can get away with mentioning having two daughters but never elaborating. Merlin devising the conception of these children as potential backups for an heir doesn't feel too out of character, either. Or do you think Mordred being Arthur's only son is more appealing as a concept? If the former, which of the sons do you think would be best as an addition? And if the latter, why do you think so?
