Deadpool and Wolverine is marching toward what may be the biggest opening and overall gross for an R-rated movie ever after a blockbuster debut. But while critics have scored it in the bottom half of MCU movies, audiences? They adore it.

As it stands, Deadpool and Wolverine has the second highest audience score in MCU movie history, behind only a pair of films tied for first place. Here’s the full list as it stands with Deadpool and Wolverine added:

  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home – 98%
  2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – 98%
  3. Deadpool and Wolverine – 97%
  4. Spider-Man: Far From Home – 95%
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – 94%
  6. Guardians of the Galaxy – 92%
  7. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – 92%
  8. Iron Man – 91%
  9. Black Widow – 91%
  10. Marvel’s The Avengers – 91%
  11. Avengers: Infinity War – 91%
  12. Avengers Endgame – 90%
  13. Captain America: Civil War – 89%
  14. Thor Ragnarok – 87%
  15. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – 87%
  16. Spider-Man: Homecoming – 87%
  17. Doctor Strange – 86%
  18. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness – 85%
  19. Ant-Man – 85%
  20. The Marvels – 82%
  21. Avengers: Age of Ultron – 82%
  22. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – 82%
  23. Ant-Man and the Wasp – 81%
  24. Black Panther – 79%
  25. Eternals – 78%
  26. Iron Man 3 – 78%
  27. Thor – 76%
  28. Thor: The Dark World – 75%
  29. Captain America: The First Avenger – 75%
  30. Iron Man 2 – 71%
  31. The Incredible Hulk – 70%
  32. Captain Marvel – 45%

A 97% is a colossal score for being 30+ movies deep into the MCU and supposed superhero fatigue encompassing everyone. I’d say that’s more true for critics, who I believe are scoring superhero movies a lot lower now than they would have those same movies a few years ago. For reference, though they weren’t in the MCU at the time, Deadpool 1 has an 85% critic, 90% audience score, Deadpool 2 has an 84% critic, 86% audience score.

Well, they do call it “fan service” for a reason. Two of the top three movies share a similar concept, non-MCU heroes coming into the MCU to a certain extent, No Way Home with its Sony Spider-Men and Deadpool and Wolverine needing to save both their own timeline and the MCU’s in a movie that’s more or less burying the FOX era. I know some critics hated how cameo-laden and inside-jokey it was. Not me though, and not fans who are lavishing it with these high scores.

What seems clear to me after that is the performance of this film will cement the idea that these two are sticking around the MCU for a good long while, as you don’t put up a potential billion dollar box office haul and leave those characters behind. Or in Wolverine’s case, recast them. But what happens from here is anyone’s guess.
