BREAKING NEWS: Reflecting on the Tragic Events of 9/11
September 11, 2001: A Day that Shook the World
As we mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the memories of that fateful day remain etched in our minds like a searing scar. The world came to a standstill as terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, crashing two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The impact of the attacks was felt globally, leaving a trail of destruction, loss, and chaos in its wake.
My Reaction and the Reaction Around Me
I was in my early twenties at the time, living in a small town in the Midwest. I remember waking up to the sounds of my parents frantically switching between TV channels, their faces filled with shock and horror. The news was flashing images of the burning Twin Towers, and the words "Terrorist Attack" were being repeated over and over again.
As I watched the footage of the planes hitting the buildings, I felt like I was in a nightmare. The realization that this was real, that this was happening in the United States, hit me like a ton of bricks. My parents were in tears, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of panic and fear.
The atmosphere around me was palpable. Neighbors were gathering in the streets, huddled together, trying to make sense of the devastating news. The air was thick with emotion, as people struggled to comprehend the sheer scale of the tragedy.
Global Reaction
The reaction around the world was equally devastating. People from all walks of life, from different cultures and countries, came together to mourn the loss of thousands of innocent lives. Flags were lowered to half-mast, and memorial services were held in cities and towns across the globe.

For additional context, this is a sincere and honest question; I am a Muslim who grew up in America surrounded by history and knowledge of it, so please understand this is fully sincere and from a place of genuine interest. What were your reactions? What were the general reactions of the people around you? How did the news cover it? Were there any people making prayers/du’a for those in the US?

I was 9. I woke up, and saw my mom crying in the living room with footage of the towers coming down. At school, our teacher gathered us to explain what happened.
Other than that, it was a regular day for me, especially because at the time I thought planes crashing into buildings was something that happened on occasion.
Around me, on the other hand, all the adults lost their fucking minds. “DON’T OPEN THE MAIL, LET ME CHECK IT FIRST,” stuff like that. My Syrian family members stopped going by their legal Arabic names in order to not offend people by their existence. There were tons of people calling for mass death against Muslim countries in general. These people were considered respectable.
Edit: Regarding things that weren’t covered, I was gobsmacked to learn, decades after the fact, that Iran held a candlelight vigil in Tehran with over 100,000 attendees. The American media did not report this, because Iran always has to be our enemy. In retrospect, we absolutely did not deserve their sympathy.
