Hi, as many here. Yesterday’s news felt like a step back. I feel surprisingly numb to it but only because I’ve been practicing techniques I’ve learned and read here. Reminding myself this is a stand alone event unrelated to everything else and my own travel, avoiding the news and not watching the videos etc.

That said I was already dreading having so many flights upcoming.

We have a flight from Amsterdam to Berlin tomorrow. Then Berlin to Frankfurt later in the week super early. Then Frankfurt to the U.S which will be over 10 hours.

I hate having to do more flights than necessary, contemplated the trains but traveling with my child and all our luggage it’s just too long to be convenient.

I have some questions about the sensations I experience that I thought I’d ask and maybe find answers to:

  • on our flight from Berlin to Amsterdam we were in an airbus and the flight sensation just felt physically FAST and so light. I don’t know how to explain it. It felt like we were just whizzing around and being more jostled compared to the long haul’s that for me feel all around more smooth. Is this just my anxiety or is there some merit to the sensational difference?

Take off was particularly awful feeling for me. Landing was as well but particularly take off and the angles of the turns just felt so so intense and extreme, like we’d just simply roll and lose control.

  • I know we aren’t speculating and again, I’m trying not to relate everything but the fact that the event occurred an hour into a short flight which is similar to my two upcoming flights, I just feel so nervous about. I usually feel more comfortable knowing it’s such a quick hop with places to land should anything occur along the way but this freak accident is sort of defying everything we usually think to be true.

  • there is a point in the flight when landing that has happened twice now on recent flights where it feels and sounds like the engine suddenly shuts off and it’s too quiet. It feels like we are simply gliding down. I’ve also had the opposite experience where suddenly it gets really loud and feels like we’ve essentially slammed on the brakes or something. Both occurrences just really feel horrible, physically.

  • flying through clouds always feels like there is a moment of suspense and I feel a physical difference flying through them, a bit of weightlessness.

  1. Highly recommend looking out at the wingtip and the horizon instead of down at the ground. If you’re looking down at the ground you’ll give yourself the illusion that things are much steeper than they are.

The plane isn’t “balancing” on something — the idea that if you’re in a steep turn you’ll roll out of control just can’t happen.

    To your comment about landing…

The engines are still running. Everything is fine. But you wouldn’t give your car more gas going down a steep hill, right? Same principle.

Use of the speed brakes/spoilers to slow the aircraft or maintain speed can cause that “braking” sensation you described as well as the increase in noise as they do generate more aerodynamic noise. Configuring the flaps or the extension of the landing gear may also be what you’re feeling.
