I found out something I never knew before. I don't watch the Olympics much but noticed the USA is about to win the most gold for this years Olympics. I didn't know that for the majority of olympics in history, the USA has won the most and in 2024, its the same outcome. See article below to see records in history.

https://www.wfaa.com/article/sports/olympics/olympic-medal-count-paris-usa-history/287-856b12a9-cc80-4534-bb36-ff3442e5ce7e

I was somewhat shocked that the USA is still so dominant because for the last few years all I have heard about on the news is how bad America is, how there is civil division amongst political parties, how inflation and crime has gotten out of control, how I hear most business and people are moving abroad to live a better life. I had this image that the USA is deteriorating. I even heard how in the NBA most international athletes are becoming stars and that the USA athletes are not becoming great as they used to. This is all I hear, yet here the olympics are on and the USA has over 100 medals and they are about to win the olympic games. It makes me think that the USA must still be very powerful if the best athletes are still coming out of here. But how is this? its a great question I want to ask?

I would of imagined with the downfall of America I am hearing we would no longer have the best athletes. So I am confused. How is it that America is still creating the best athletes? will this be the same outcome in 2028? and moving forward?

this is a very fascinating topic for me, because I was one of those people who thought about moving abroad to escape the high cost of living in America and what I heard as the downfall of America, but am I being brainwashed and not realizing how great America really is? If the best athletes still come from America today, that tells us something, but for how long will this last?

anyone please leave comments about this.

  1. For me it’s simple. They have the population (3rd largest in the world) and they have a bunch of money that they are willing to spend on training and facilities.

  2. US winning the most golds is not a guarantee. And which person you support for president has no bearing on how you perform on an athletic field.

But just so you know, a significant number of athletes from other countries train in the US and/or were on college teams in the US.

  3. lol, maybe don’t believe everything you hear. While there are certainly issues in the US, we are still pretty much the best at a whole lot of things. Including sports, we love our sports, and spend a lot of money on them.

  4. You should get off of Reddit and whatever other forums you’re on. The US has issues, but people are living their lives comfortably and thriving no matter what Reddit Europeans try to make you believe.

Many of the athletes you’re seeing train in the USA no matter their country, btw

  5. Please do yourself a favor and take a trip outside the US! Me and my wife have traveled excessively for the last 8 years and we’ve yet to find a country that can match the US and how everything is. Yes, we work hard. Yes, we pay high taxes. Yes, there is no help from the government (heck I don’t need any). But trust me if you got it figured out, you’ll live comfortably and set yourself to retire without any of the issues you hear about. But it all has to come from you! America is built on the idea that you are your own leader. So go ahead and make something out of your life! Trust it’s the best country in the world, once you understand what it’s built on.

  6. There was a local broadcast panel discussion about why it’s advantageous for young athletes to compete even if they do badly in the Olympics. It’s because there’s a hope that a US school/US organization picks them up and then they can get much better access to facilities and coaches.

The US is just far superior in that, which means the general population access to and awareness of these events is far greater than pretty much all other countries. There’s a few like Australia, who also have great programs but then they’re hurt by population size (and in general the range of sports they have access to is less than the US)

  7. Not sure if this is what you’re interested in, but much of USA’s success in the Olympics has been attributed to our sports systems funneling into collegiate sports (run by the NCAA) which provide scholarships to many young athletes in Olympic events and allows them to continue training and competing at a very high level into young adulthood. The NCAA is also a huge platform for international students to receive an education and world class training in their sport as well.

However, one of the biggest problems in the NCAA system has been the lack of compensation from universities for athletes in sports like football and basketball which both rake in millions of dollars based on student athlete performance each year. Similarly, the NCAA has been rigid in how it allows athletes in any sport to benefit from their talents outside of the NCAA, with extreme limits on prize money acceptance for other tournaments outside of the school season, rules against taking gifts or sponsorships, social media influencing, etc. even for athletes who may experience a teenage peak in ability or fame (gymnasts, swimmers, etc.) prior to even entering college. These rules and the rights of NCAA athletes to receive compensation have (rightfully) been eroded away over the last Olympic cycle through several legislative battles but the system left in its place is also posing many problems because it has been patched together on the fly with seemingly little consideration for the variations in likely compensation eligibility/sources across the sports and within different university systems. As a result it’s thought that significant changes are coming to how the smaller, lower revenue but high Olympic prestige sports will continue to be funded within athlete compensation systems over the next quad that may reduce international student participation in NCAA and US dominance in certain Olympic events.

These [two](https://youtu.be/YMT_hdh4mlw?si=4b4vTC7QfYuALQEz) [podcast](https://youtu.be/G19rF-TmlQI?si=10-huNcK0NbW76TD) episodes go into details about the systems, sports, and athletes caught in the middle of this and a variety of perspectives on what should be done to fix it moving forward.

TL;dr Our college sports system pulls a lot of the weight for USA (and global) Olympic performance but NCAA’s current (and well deserved) legal nightmare may or may not change that in the near future.

(ETA: I am by no means an expert in this situation, so I apologize if anything here is completely incorrect. I’m also sure I missed some nuance somewhere given the amount of sports events and perspectives involved in this, so please feel free to add that as needed.)
