Pothole Damage Top Concern for Drivers, Says RAC

As the UK struggles to maintain its aging road infrastructure, the UK’s largest breakdown provider, RAC, has revealed that pothole damage is the number one concern for drivers. According to the latest survey by RAC, nearly 70% of motorists have experienced a puncture or damage to their vehicle due to a pothole in the past year.
Potholes, those pesky holes in the road, have long been a source of frustration for drivers, and it seems that the situation is only getting worse. With over 1.2 million potholes reported on UK roads in 2022, it’s little wonder that drivers are becoming increasingly concerned.
"This is a staggering statistic and highlights the urgent need for local authorities to take action to improve the condition of our roads," said RAC spokesperson, Pete Williams. "Drivers are rightfully concerned about the state of our roads and the impact it’s having on their vehicles, their safety, and their overall driving experience."
The survey, which questioned over 1,400 motorists, revealed that the majority of potholes (60%) were caused by wear and tear, while 15% were the result of heavy rain and 10% were attributed to poor maintenance.
"It’s not just about the inconvenience of having to stop and deal with a puncture, it’s about the safety implications of driving on a damaged road," added Williams. "If the condition of our roads doesn’t improve, we risk seeing a surge in accidents and further damage to vehicles."
The RAC is urging local authorities to increase funding for road maintenance and for drivers to take extra care when driving on damaged roads.
