NASA’S Artemis Mission: Space Agency Aborts Launch Due to Technical Issues
By NASA officials and The Associated Press
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA scrubbed the launch of its Artemis mission on Wednesday due to a technical issue, a major setback for the agency’s efforts to return humans to the Moon.
The space agency called off the 2:17 p.m. launch attempt from Kennedy Space Center due to a problem with the rocket’s Range Safety System, which is responsible for monitoring the spacecraft’s trajectory and ensuring it follows the correct flight path.
According to NASA officials, the issue was caused by a faulty sensor that failed to properly transmit data to the launch control team. The agency will need to conduct additional tests and repairs before the next launch attempt.
"We’re extremely disappointed, but we’re not going to take any risks with our spacecraft or the safety of our astronauts," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson in a statement.
The Artemis mission, which was delayed multiple times, aims to send the first woman and the next man to the Moon’s south pole in the next few years. The mission will also establish a sustainable presence on the lunar surface, paving the way for future human missions to Mars.
