My car started making a rattling noise 3 days ago. It’s been parked in an apartment complex parking garage (needed to park somewhere out of the heat to try and work on). I replaced an idler pulley that sounded awful and was loose. But it didnt solve the problem. Ive deduced it to pretty much the belt itself or the tensioner pulley. I bought a new belt because thats obviously the cheaper option to try first. But i dont have a 1/2 inch ratchet or 1/2 inch socket set and frankly i’m out of money between the ubers to the parts store back and forth and not being able to work (was doing gig apps after my temp job slashed hours and may be getting a job offer this week but cant take a job if i have no means to get out that way where it would be). I’m just feeling extremely defeated and really just want to get this belt on and hopefully have some good news. This has put my life on hold for days. I don’t really have anyone to call thats anywhere near this area and i’m trying to get this resolved as quick as possible.
I did run the car without the serpentine belt and the noise is only there when the serpentine belt is on. Noise is present whether ac is on or off. Water pump pulley and the alternator sounded normal to me. I havent had any check engine lights. It just started making that noise at idle and it increases with acceleration. The belt is original to the car as far as i know. Ive owned it since 35k miles and its at 114k now. Ive never changed it. I’m assuming the belt is just stretched out due to age. The tensioner seems to still hold the belt tight. But if anyone is in the northern texas off 121 frisco/mckinney area and is able to help id be grateful. I only have a 3/8 ratchet up to 19mm socket but its too small for the clutch pulley which you have to turn to get the ac belt off to get to the serpentine belt. Ac belt is a stretch belt and i dont have a replacement for that one yet (isnt carried in stock. Will order when i get money next).
