World’s Second-Largest Diamond Found in Botswana
In a groundbreaking discovery, a massive diamond weighing 1,098 carats has been unearthed in Botswana, making it the second-largest diamond ever found in the world. The stunning gemstone was discovered by Lucara Diamond Corp., a Canadian mining company, at its Karowe mine in Botswana.
The diamond, known as the "Lesedi La Rona," is a rare Type IIa diamond, considered to be of exceptional quality due to its high clarity and color. The gemstone is estimated to be worth millions of dollars, although the exact value has not been disclosed.
"We are thrilled to announce the discovery of this exceptional diamond, which is a testament to the Karowe mine’s reputation for producing large, high-quality diamonds," said William Lamb, Lucara’s CEO.
The discovery of the Lesedi La Rona is a significant milestone for Botswana, which is already one of the world’s largest diamond producers. The country’s diamond industry is a major contributor to its economy, and this find is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s mining sector.
The Karowe mine, which is located in the Orapa district of Botswana, has been in operation since 2012. The mine is known for producing large, high-quality diamonds, including several diamonds weighing over 100 carats.
