Auckland, New Zealand – In the wake of recent crimes, self-defense classes are gaining traction in Auckland, with locals seeking ways to protect themselves in the face of increased violence.
According to reports, instances of assault and robbery have risen in recent months, leaving many residents feeling vulnerable and concerned about their safety.
Self-Defense: A Viable Solution
In response, martial arts schools and community centers in Auckland are offering self-defense classes aimed at empowering locals with the skills they need to protect themselves.
Instructor Samantha Smith, of the popular Auckland Martial Arts Academy, says the demand for self-defense classes has surged in the past few months. "It’s unacceptable that people are feeling fearful in their own city. Our goal is to educate and equip people with the skills and confidence to defend themselves."
The self-defense classes being offered in Auckland typically cover various techniques, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and Krav Maga. Instructors also focus on teaching participants how to remain aware of their surroundings and how to develop a sense of personal safety.

Recent statistics from the Auckland City Council indicate that reported violent crimes have increased by 15% over the past year. Meanwhile, a poll conducted by the New Zealand Herald found that over 70% of respondents feel that they are not safe walking alone in certain areas of the city at night.
"We want to empower our community to take control of their safety," says Local Councillor, Rachel Hunter. "Self-defense classes can provide a valuable tool for people to feel more secure in their daily lives."

Has anyone ever actually been arrested (more specifically charged) in Auckland for using a taser / pepper-spray (explicitly) in a self-defense situation?
My partner travels to work and back every day using busses and train networks(between 3 and 4 hours a day… So statistically speaking… with all the shit in the news lately… I feel she needs to be able to defend herself against these thugs if she is ever caught up in a situation like this?

If she wants to be safe and not just think she is safe, she should do a self defence course. Very valuable and far more useful than carrying an illegal weapon that is more likely to be taken away by a thug and used on her. They will go into the practicalities of why weapons are a bit pointless (either she won’t get to it in time, she won’t use it fully, or she will mace an innocent person who she doesn’t like the look of (i.e. drunk) and then be looking at being charged with a crime).
Yes. If you arm yourself, especially with a restricted weapon (pepper spray and tasers are both restricted weapons) and then use them, even in self defense, expect to be charged and in front of a judge.
Using Pepper spray or a taser is the best way to get a court case, not to mention it would be considered an offense wepon.
Pepper sprays (and tasers) are illegal for civilian use. But she could use body sprays, they won’t be viewed as carrying a weapon. They’re not as effective though.
I’ll just say too, ‘statistically speaking’ your gf is at very low risk of attack. Tens of thousands of people take public transport everyday and these instances are not common, random and sporadic. You may also need to lay off the news for a while to gain some perspective.
Jujitsu is not a good one for self defense.. specific self defense classes are best..
Security person once told me that good old cockroach spray is more effective than pepper spray. But yes – don’t get into a situation where you need it.
Deep heat spray or that after burn spray is really painful in the eyes
The skill is not being able to react with violence, it is observing and identifying threats before they happen and disengaging. Self defence 101, no amount of self defence training will save you from a committed attacker that’s more skilled and larger, you don’t want to beat them, you just want to survive. Todd group line training or a company called hard Target in Auckland teaches specifically these skills. Self defence starts with awareness.
