Charities Fear Double Energy Price Hit for Pensioners in England

Date: March 10, 2023

LONDON, ENGLAND – A group of charities has expressed concerns that pensioners in England may face a double whammy of energy price increases, exacerbating the already dire financial situation for many older adults.

According to a recent report, the UK’s energy regulator, Ofgem, has announced a 54% increase in the maximum wholesale price cap for energy suppliers, which will take effect in April. This comes on top of a 12% rise in the price cap last October.

The charities, including Age UK, the Royal Voluntary Service, and Help the Aged, are warning that the combined impact of these price hikes could leave many pensioners struggling to afford basic necessities like food, heating, and medicine.

"We are deeply concerned about the devastating impact that these price increases will have on older people," said Caroline Abrahams, Age UK’s Charity Director. "Many pensioners are already living on the edge, and these price hikes will only serve to exacerbate their financial struggles."

The charities are calling on the government to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of these price increases, including providing targeted support to vulnerable households and increasing funding for energy efficiency schemes.
