BREAKING: California Sea Lions Take Over Beach in Monterey, Shocking Residents – NBC News

Monterey, CA – In a bizarre turn of events, a group of California sea lions have taken over a beach in Monterey, stunning residents and tourists alike.

According to witnesses, the sea lions began swarming the beach on Wednesday afternoon, drawing a crowd of onlookers.

"It was like something out of a marine biology textbook," said Jane Smith, a local resident. "I’d never seen anything like it. They’re big, they’re loud, and they’re everywhere."

The beach takeover has caused significant disruptions, with lifeguards warning residents to stay away.

"Due to the unusual behavior of a large number of California sea lions on our beach, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, City of Monterey and the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District are urging all visitors to exercise caution and stay out of the water," said Monterey City Public Works Director, Michael Burns.

The cause of the sea lions’ migration to the beach is unknown, but it may be related to food sources in the area.

"California sea lions can be attracted to human activity around food sources such as fishing camps, boat launches, or beach cafes," said Dr. Robert Vrijenhoek, Marine Biologist at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Center. "It’s also possible that the sudden influx of sea lions may be connected to changes in their diet or ocean conditions."

Meanwhile, rescue teams are working to help relocate the sea lions to safer areas.

Sea lions are found in high numbers along California’s coastline, especially in areas with a rich prey base. They can weigh between 500-1,300 pounds and reach up to 6-7 feet in length.
