2024 Vuelta a España – Stage 09: Primoz Roglic Takes Solo Win in Granada, Sepp Kuss Retakes Leader’s Jersey

Motril, Spain – September 10, 2024 – In a thrilling Stage 09 of the 2024 Vuelta a España, Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) took a solo victory in Granada, outracing the peloton by over 30 seconds. Meanwhile, Spain’s Sepp Kuss (Movistar Team) reclaimed the overall leader’s red jersey after a dramatic time trial on the final day of the stage.

Roglic, the defending Vuelta champion, rode aggressively from the start, using his exceptional climbing skills to distance himself from the pack. The 33-year-old Slovenian rider was aided by his Jumbo-Visma teammates, who provided strong support throughout the 181.5-kilometer stage.

"I’m very happy with this win," Roglic said after the stage. "My team did an amazing job to set me up for the victory. I knew the finish was going to be tough, so I went early to try and make a difference. It’s always special to win on a day like today."

Kuss, who had worn the leader’s jersey for two days, was unable to maintain his advantage after a puncture forced him to stop and repair his bike. He lost over 30 seconds, allowing the top contenders to close the gap. The 28-year-old Spaniard now holds a slender 12-second lead over Italian climber Fausto Masnada (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team).

"It was a tough day for me," Kuss admitted. "I had a flat tire and had to wait for a new wheel, which cost me a lot of time. I’m just grateful to still be in the lead, but I know it won’t be easy to defend it now."

The 2024 Vuelta a España continues on Wednesday with Stage 10, a 154.2-kilometer route from Alto Campoo to La Campana, featuring a category-1 climb and a challenging descent into the finish.
