Lisbon Earthquake Strikes, Leaving Devastation in Its Wake

Update 12:00 PM GMT

A massive earthquake has struck Lisbon, Portugal, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. The quake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, has caused widespread damage and has killed at least 50 people, with the death toll expected to rise.

The earthquake, which struck at approximately 9:00 AM GMT, was felt throughout the city and has left thousands of people homeless. Buildings have collapsed, and emergency services are struggling to respond to the scale of the disaster.

"We are doing everything we can to rescue those trapped under the rubble," said José Alberto, Lisbon’s mayor. "Our priority is to provide assistance to those affected and to ensure that those injured receive the medical attention they need."

Eyewitnesses describe the scene as "apocalyptic," with buildings reduced to rubble and debris scattered everywhere.

"It was like nothing I have ever seen before," said Maria Costa, a resident of Lisbon. "I was at home when the earthquake struck. I didn’t know what was happening until I heard the screams and the crashing sounds. I ran outside and saw that our neighborhood was destroyed."

The Portuguese government has declared a state of emergency and has called for international assistance.

"We are grateful for the international community’s support and are working closely with our partners to respond to this disaster," said Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa.
