Fury as 10,000 Homes on Ex-Military Bases Remain Unbuilt – A Scandalous Reality for Thousands of Families

Despite promises to transform former military sites into thriving communities, a shocking truth has emerged: over 10,000 homes on ex-military bases in England remain unbuilt, leaving thousands of families in limbo.

The revelation has sparked widespread outrage, with critics accusing the government and development companies of failing to deliver on promises made to local communities.

According to recently released figures, a staggering 10,354 homes on disused military bases across England were supposed to be completed by 2022. However, only 2,642 have been built, leaving a massive backlog of unbuilt properties and frustrated residents.

The affected communities include:

  • Former RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, where 1,150 homes were promised but only 330 have been built
  • RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk, where 950 homes were supposed to be constructed but only 200 have been completed
  • RAF Honington in Suffolk, where 800 homes were promised but only 300 have been built
  • RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, where 500 homes were supposed to be constructed but only 150 have been completed

Residents and local campaigners are demanding answers from government officials and development companies, citing feelings of betrayal and frustration.

"This is an absolute scandal," said Sarah Johnson, a resident of RAF Lyneham. "We were promised a whole new community, but instead, we’ve been left with nothing but rubble and broken promises. It’s unacceptable and we demand action."

Politicians are also weighing in on the issue, with Labour’s shadow communities secretary, Steve Reed, condemning the government’s handling of the situation.

"Thousands of families have been left without the homes they were promised," Reed said. "This is a huge failure of government policy and a reflection of the Tory party’s priorities being out of touch with the needs of working-class people."

The Ministry of Defence has released a statement acknowledging the problem, but has yet to provide a specific timeline for when the unbuilt homes will be completed.

"We are committed to delivering high-quality homes on our former bases and are working closely with developers and local authorities to address the issues."
