New Māori Queen Crowned Amid Emotional Ceremony as her Father King Tuheitia Laid to Rest

Palace, New Zealand – In a solemn and significant ceremony, NgÄ“ Te Rangi Paiarere was crowned the new Queen of the Māori King Movement as her father, King Tuheitia, was laid to rest at a gravesite in Cambridge, Waikato.

The ceremony was held at the sacred Lake Ngaroto site in KōÄtuiarangi, Hamilton, where the royal family has strong ties and traditions. The coronation process is a significant moment for the Māori King Movement, marking a new era for the institution and the Māori people.

Mourners gathered at the burial site to pay their respects to King Tuheitia, who passed away on April 15th. His body was transported from Waikato Hospital to Lake Ngaroto in a traditional Māori flotilla, known as a waka.

"It’s a beautiful ceremony, but also a time of sadness and reflection for the royal family and our people," said Her Worship the Mayor of Waikato District, Jacqui Nichols. "We offer our condolences to Queen Tamatoa and her whānau, as well as to all Māori communities nationwide."

Queen Tamatoa, Ngē Te Rangi Paiarere, was officially crowned during the ceremony, acknowledging her role as the future leader of the Māori King Movement.

"Today, we crown a new queen, who embodies the spirit and the tikanga (custom) of our ancestors," said Wharekahika Kaumaatua, Chief Kaumaatua of KōÄtuiarangi. "Her wisdom, courage, and dedication to our people and culture will guide her and inspire our nation in this new era."

Queen Tamatoa, in her address, paid tribute to her father, King Tuheitia, acknowledging his contributions to the Māori King Movement.

"Today, I accept this responsibility, humbly and with the deepest gratitude to my late father, King Tuheitia, who guided me through his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication to our people and our heritage," Queen Tamatoa said.

As she ascends to her new role, Queen Tamatoa will focus on addressing pressing issues affecting the Māori people, including land rights, poverty, and health inequalities. Her coronation ceremony represents a new chapter for the Māori King Movement, emphasizing unity, cultural preservation, and hope for a brighter future.

  1. Slightly off topic, but we here in the UK have had a recent change of the guard and I know we have a significant Maori contingent here in r/Rugbyunion.
