Breaking News: French PM Barnier Gets to Work as Left Prepares Protests

[Updated: 12:00 PM GMT, March 10, 2023]

French Prime Minister Bruno Barnier has begun his first day in office, as the country’s left-wing opposition parties prepare mass protests against his government.

Barnier, who was appointed by President Élisabeth Borne last week, is expected to face significant challenges in implementing his economic and social reform agenda.

The left-wing opposition, led by the French Communist Party and the Socialist Party, has promised to mobilize thousands of protesters across the country, demanding that the government roll back its plans to cut benefits and increase taxes.

"Barnier’s government is a threat to the welfare state and the rights of workers," said Communist Party leader, Fabien Roussel. "We will not stand idly by while they destroy the social fabric of our country."

The protests are expected to take place in major cities across France, including Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, with thousands of activists and trade unionists planned to participate.

Barnier’s government has said that it is committed to implementing a series of economic reforms, including cutting corporate taxes and increasing the retirement age, in order to boost growth and reduce the country’s budget deficit.

However, the left-wing opposition has accused the government of betraying the country’s social and economic values, and of prioritizing the interests of big business and the wealthy over those of workers and the poor.
