So I work for this game news/review company that is based in Japan. I'm a new hire.

My job description is a Game News Writer/Technical Writer. We write news, reviews and creates databases and guides for games.

The "best" writer in the company is this person who can submit 3-5 articles/day (I'm suspecting AI Work ofc) but in the months that I've been here, I've never seen this person review a single game.

This has caught my suspicion because this person pumps out articles about different kinds of games and makes it seem like she knows what she's talking about – but is pure BS in reality. The articles are embellished and doesn't really have any substance to it. Our page has a 43 second average page view time (imagine that). One day I asked her what her favorite game is, and she answered, "The Sims". (Blew my mind and ever since then I never took her word for anything than bullcrap.)

I know that I've been hired by this crappy company and I seem to hate my coworkers more and more each day because most of them don't even know what they're talking about. One example is when got invited for an alpha testing for Spectre Divide. We played in different matches and servers, never teamed up, and every time I went against them, I blew them out of the water. With my 23-27 Kills vs 7 kills a game. Now, I'm an R6 player so I didn't really pay too much attention to it.

After the official alpha test ended, my suspicions about them grew a little. I discovered during that day that most of them are "gacha" players which has led me to thinking that these are not the gamers that should review Spectre Divide.

Then came another instance when we got keys for EA's Madden game and the director asked who in our company knows football. We're in the Philippines so obviously no one here knows anything about football (Basketball is big here). The job of reviewing Madden simply went to the guy who reviewed the most games. The trend here, as I've observed, to make it seem like they know what they're talking about:

A lot of the reviewers here purposely gives the games that they review a low score and searches for "trendy titles" because we have such low page view time and no one really reads our articles anyway. The title for Madden is, Madden 25 Review: Take What Works and Run With It. The article is pure crap.

Also, because we are such a crappy company, our review policy is this:

1 Game = 1 Shift (8 hours to review). So it doesn't matter if the game is rated at 10 hours campaign completion or 20 or 100. When I asked about this, my coworker he just told me to "know everything about the game" and just write about it. Everything we missed, we'll correct if somebody makes a splash about it. My respect for this company is so low that it is reflected on my work.

I have been applying to other companies for a job and I'm scheduled for an interview to this startup game news/review company. What advice can you give in the meantime? I'm hating my coworkers each day.

  1. Unless you can teach them how paying someone for 20 hours or more to review a game is profitable for them (tell me too), you just kind of got to suck it up. You’re not in the critical analysis, thought of gaming business .. you’re a written word content creator.
