Algiers, Algeria – Voting has begun in Algeria’s presidential election, with a total of 18 candidates vying for the country’s top leadership position.

The election is being held amid a backdrop of uncertainty and political tension in the North African country. Incumbent President Abdelmajid Tebboune is seeking a second term, but he faces a number of challengers from the opposition and independent sectors.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, former Prime Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune pledged to restore economic stability and improve living conditions for the Algerian people if he is re-elected.

"I am committed to tackling the economic crisis and restoring stability to the country," Tebboune said. "We will work tirelessly to improve living conditions and ensure that the country is governed in a transparent and accountable manner."

CHALLENGERS IN THE RUNNING:

Several prominent challengers are running against Tebboune, including former Prime Minister Ali Benflis, who is seen as a strong contender.

Benflis, who served as Prime Minister from 2000 to 2003, has promised to tackle the economic crisis and reduce corruption. He has also vowed to restore the country’s dignity and sovereignty.

HOW TO VOTE:

Voting is taking place at polling stations across Algeria, with voters able to cast their ballots between 8am and 7pm local time.

Election officials have reported high turnout so far, with many Algerians flocking to the polls to cast their votes.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?

Voting is open to all Algerian citizens who are registered to vote and have reached the age of 18.
