Breaking News: B.C. Landslide Halts Sockeye Salmon Run
Updated August 12, 2023
As the annual salmon run reaches its peak in British Columbia, environmental officials are sounding the alarm about a devastating landslide that has blocked the passage of sockeye salmon in a critical area.
According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), very few sockeye have passed the site of the landslide, which occurred on August 8th, near the town of Squamish. The landslide has effectively cut off the main migration route of the sockeye salmon, which are already struggling due to climate change and other environmental factors.
"We are extremely concerned about the impact of this landslide on the sockeye salmon run," said a spokesperson for the DFO. "These fish are already under a lot of stress, and this blockage could make it even harder for them to reach their spawning grounds."
The landslide has occurred in a sensitive area where the salmon are known to congregate before making their way upstream to spawn. The DFO is working with local authorities and stakeholders to assess the situation and determine the best course of action to mitigate the effects of the landslide.
Sockeye salmon are a vital part of the region’s ecosystem and economy, with many communities relying on the fish for food, recreation, and tourism.
