According to a recent survey conducted by the BBC, online news has surpassed TV news in terms of popularity and media consumption. The findings reveal a significant shift in the way people consume news, with online platforms taking center stage.
The BBC’s survey, which interviewed over 2,000 adults in the UK, showed that 45% of respondents preferred to consume news online, while only 27% preferred to watch TV news. Other popular news sources included newspapers (21%), radio (16%), and social media (12%).
"This study provides a fascinating insight into how people are consuming news today," said a spokesperson for the BBC. "Our findings suggest that the internet has become the dominant platform for news consumption, with online news sources such as our own website and app proving particularly popular."
The survey also revealed a number of other interesting insights, including:
- The majority of respondents (53%) said they checked online news sources multiple times a day, while only 31% said they checked TV news multiple times a day.
- 55% of respondents said they trusted online news sources "somewhat" or "very much", while only 41% said they trusted TV news sources equally.
- 64% of respondents said they followed online news sources on social media, while only 46% said they followed TV news sources on social media.
These findings come as no surprise to digital marketing experts, who have been predicting a shift away from traditional TV and towards online platforms for some time. "The rise of online news is a major indicator of the changing way we consume media," said Sarah Johnson, a leading expert in digital marketing. "Online platforms offer unparalleled flexibility and convenience, and news consumers are responding accordingly."
In light of these findings, the BBC plans to continue investing in its online news offerings, as well as its social media presence. "We will continue to adapt to changing consumer habits and provide our audiences with the news and information they need, where they need it," said a spokesperson for the BBC.
