Former Peruvian Leader Alberto Fujimori Dies at 86
Lima, Peru – Alberto Fujimori, the former President of Peru who ruled the country from 1990 to 2000, has passed away at the age of 86. Fujimori died on Saturday at a hospital in Santiago, Chile, where he had been receiving treatment for cancer.
Fujimori was a controversial figure during his time in office, known for his authoritarian rule and human rights abuses. He was convicted of human rights violations and corruption in 2009 and spent 12 years in prison before being pardoned in 2017.
Born on July 28, 1938, in Lima, Peru, Fujimori was a member of the Japanese-Peruvian community and was raised in a family of modest means. He studied engineering and later earned a degree in economics from the National University of Engineering in Lima.
Fujimori’s political career began in the 1970s, when he served as a member of Congress and later as a minister in the government of President Fernando Belaúnde Terry. He won the presidential election in 1990 and took office in July of that year.
During his time in office, Fujimori implemented a series of economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the Peruvian economy, which had been in crisis in the 1980s. He also launched a campaign against terrorism, which included the use of special forces to combat the Shining Path and Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement guerrilla groups.
However, Fujimori’s presidency was also marked by human rights abuses, including the use of death squads to eliminate political opponents and the forced disappearance of hundreds of people. He was also accused of corruption and embezzlement, and was convicted of these crimes in 2009.
Fujimori was arrested in 2005 and spent 12 years in prison before being pardoned in 2017. He was released from prison in January 2018 and has been living in Chile since then.
Fujimori’s death has been met with mixed reactions in Peru, with some people expressing condolences and others criticizing his legacy.
