In a monumental victory for animal welfare activists, the last remaining captive orca in Latin America has been released back into the wild after decades of confinement. The orca, named Kshamenk, was kept in a small tank at the New Sea Life Park in Punta del Este, Uruguay, since 1979.
Kshamenk’s release marks a significant milestone in the effort to end the captivity of orcas and other cetaceans. The campaign was led by the global organization, Sea Shepherd, in collaboration with local and international partners.
FREE AT LAST
The massive orca, estimated to be around 40 years old, was transported by boat to its new home in the Atlantic Ocean. A team of experts, including marine biologists, veterinarians, and animal welfare advocates, worked together to ensure a safe and stress-free transfer.
Dr. Rodrigo Bustamante, a marine biologist at the University of Uruguay, stated, "Kshamenk’s release is a testament to the tireless efforts of the people who fought for his freedom. We are thrilled to see him swim freely in his natural habitat once again."
CAPTIVITY CONCERNS
Kshamenk’s confinement had sparked widespread concerns about the welfare of cetaceans in captivity. Critics argued that keeping such intelligent and social animals in small tanks was inhumane and detrimental to their physical and mental health.
The New Sea Life Park, which was shut down in 2020 due to financial difficulties, faced intense scrutiny and legal battles over the treatment of Kshamenk and other animals.
GLOBAL REACTION
The news of Kshamenk’s release has sparked a wave of reactions from around the world. Animal welfare advocates, celebrities, and activists have taken to social media to celebrate the orca’s freedom.
"Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to free Kshamenk! This is a huge victory for animal welfare and a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet’s incredible creatures," tweeted actress and animal lover, Jane Goodall.
