"It’s hard to find a place on the street that’s being used as a residential, it’s all short-term rentals now," said Shirley Wilson, a long-term resident of the affected community. "It’s completely changed the character of this neighborhood. We’re going to be pushed out one by one."
The noise and disruptions are not just limited to late-night occurrences. Some residents have stated that noise levels are ongoing, disrupting their daily sleep and routines. Others say that parking spaces are perpetually taken up by travelers, causing congestion and accidents.
BC Residents Taking Action
A group called "Neighborhoods against Short-Term Rentals (NSR)" has cropped up, mobilizing neighborhood residents to voice their collective concerns. They are determined to hold local authorities, including the City of Vancouver and the Province of BC, accountable for addressing what they perceive as a developing crisis.
"We’re giving the City of Vancouver another chance to get it right," said Rachel Lee, a representative of NSR. "We’re pleading with them to take note of our concerns and the impact that these short-term rentals are having on this community."
Government Crackdown Looming
In response to the proliferation of STRs, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Selina Robinson has announced plans to introduce proposed legislation to regulate the STRE (Short-Term Rental) industry. Included in the new regulations:
- Registration systems: Owners of STR’s will be required to pay a registration fee and pass a series of background and safety checks.
- Occupancy limits: STRs will be placed under occupancy limits to keep the noise and disruption minimized.
