OSCAR PIASTRI WINS THE AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX!
Date: April 30, 2023
Location: Baku City Circuit, Baku, Azerbaijan
The 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix has come to a thrilling conclusion, with rookie driver Oscar Piastri emerging victorious in his maiden Formula 1 win!
The 21-year-old Australian driver, who is competing for the Alpine team, secured the top spot on the podium after a dominant performance throughout the 51-lap race. Piastri’s impressive drive saw him start from third on the grid, but he quickly moved up to second place after the start, and then capitalized on a pit stop error by the leader to take the lead.
"I’m still in shock, to be honest," Piastri said in the post-race interview. "I knew we had a good car, but to actually win a Grand Prix is just incredible. The team did an amazing job, and I’m just grateful to be part of this incredible journey."
This historic win marks the first time an Australian driver has won a Formula 1 race since Mark Webber’s victory at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was marked by a number of incidents, including a multi-car collision on lap 17 that involved several top drivers, including world champion Max Verstappen. The incident led to a lengthy safety car period, which ultimately played a key role in Piastri’s victory.
"Today was a crazy race, and I’m just glad we came out on top," Piastri added. "I don’t think anyone expected this result, but we’re just going to enjoy this moment and keep pushing for more."
The win is a major boost for the Alpine team, which is looking to secure a strong finish in the constructors’ championship this season.
"Oscar’s win is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team," said Alpine team principal Laurent Rossi. "We’re thrilled to see Oscar on the top step of the podium, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season holds for us."

Oscar Piastri takes his second career victory in the streets of Baku! On lap 20, the Australian made a daring move on the inside of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc for the lead of the race. From there, we watched breathlessly as Leclerc stayed behind Piastri, pressurizing him at every opportunity, but Piastri defended brilliantly and the McLaren driver came home for the win! (As a Leclerc fan, I'm totally not bitter, everything's fine, hahaha)
On lap 50, the penultimate lap of the race, after Leclerc dropped back from Piastri, Red Bull's Sergio Perez, finding some pace after his lack of form this season, tried to have a go at the Monegasque driver for P2. Leclerc defended well, but this invited his teammate Carlos Sainz to overtake Perez and a 3 car battle for second place commenced that ended with Sainz and Perez making contact in a race-ending crash for both of them. As of writing, the crash is under investigation, so we may yet see a penalty for one of these drivers.
In other news, McLaren's Lando Norris, the runner-up in the title fight, after a disappointing P17 in qualifying, has stormed through the field to take P4, ahead of his championship rival Max Verstappen, who finishes P5. With Norris taking the fastest lap point, he has further reduced Verstappen's championship lead to 59 points. Red Bull are still on the backfoot and McLaren are as strong as ever. Could a championship win for Lando Norris still be possible?
Further back in the field, Franco Colapinto, in only his second race in F1 after replacing Logan Sargeant mid season, finishes P8 and secures 4 points for Williams. Oliver Bearman, replacing Kevin Magnussen at Haas for this weekend as the Dane serves his 1 race ban, has also scored a point, notably finishing ahead of Nico Hulkenberg in the other Haas and becoming the first driver in F1 history to score a point in their first two races for two different teams, as he drove for Ferrari at Saudi Arabia while Carlos Sainz was ill.
McLaren have taken the lead of constructors' championship with 476 points, with Red Bull trailing now by 20 with 456 points. Ferrari are a further 31 points back with 425. It is still all to play for in the constructors if Red Bull can find some pace and if Ferrari can keep up this form.
Next Sunday, the drivers will go to another street circuit at the Singapore Grand Prix. This is the longest race on the calendar and one of the most challenging with a tight circuit, extreme heat, and the ever-present possibility of rain. Who will come out on top? Stay tuned to find out!
