Italian Police Seize €50m of Counterfeit Retro Consoles and Games in Massive Bust

Italian authorities have made a major haul in the fight against counterfeiting, seizing a staggering €50 million worth of fake retro gaming consoles and games in a massive operation. The coordinated effort between Italian police, customs officials, and Europol has brought to a halt a large-scale counterfeit operation that was flooding the market with fake Nintendo, PlayStation, and Sega consoles and games.

The operation, code-named "Operation: Retro Raid," saw police and customs officials conduct raids on several warehouses and storage facilities across Italy, resulting in the seizure of over 100,000 units of counterfeit gaming consoles and games. The seized goods include popular retro titles such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as fake consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the Sega Genesis.

The counterfeit goods were being sold online and in physical stores, with the majority being shipped from China. The operation is believed to have been run by a Chinese organized crime group, which was using Italy as a hub to distribute the fake goods to other European countries.

"This is a major victory in the fight against counterfeiting," said Italian Police Chief, Antonio Brancaccio. "We have taken a significant blow to organized crime groups that were profiting from the sale of fake goods. We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these operations and protect the intellectual property rights of legitimate businesses."

The seized goods are now being held in evidence and will be destroyed. The operation is expected to have a significant impact on the global gaming industry, which loses billions of dollars each year to counterfeiting.
